Southern South Australia 26/1/15- 30/1/15

We are now skirting the South Australian coast towards Adelaide. I am hoping for at least one feed of fish. Despite our best efforts on multiple jetties we are not able to make good on this wish.  The wind is not helping and people here are more dependent on Cray Fish than anything else. The first evening we pull into South End and stay at the jetty for some fishing before moving into town to park for the night. Then it is onwards to Beachport for a walk on South Australia’s second longest pier. At Robe the wind has really picked up and our pre-prepared tuna pasta meal is blown off our plates giving the seagulls great joy.  That night we stay at Kingston SE for another disappointing bit of jetty fishing.  Kingston SE is home to the big Lobster, a fiberglass Cray fish replica that makes even Jack (the bus) look small. A great photo opportunity!

Now we are getting to the Coorong NP. The Coorong is a large salt water-area just inside the dunes that stretches for more then a hundred kilometers. This is where the Murray River meets the ocean. A few years ago the better part of the Coorong was dry due to the 10-year draught and the river stopped running. Now that it is full again, it’s a great place for birds to live and rest on their migrations.
There are also 2 large lakes that form part of the waterways: Lake Albert and Lake Alexandrina. These two lakes are connected by “The Narrows” which you can cross by ferry.  Here we camp for a few nights so that we can explore this area further.

On the 50 dollar bill there is a small church depicted. This church is in Raukan, a small aboriginal village that is very close to the Narrows.  The Narrows also are home to Australia’s only inland lighthouse. Unfortunately we find the roads to the big barrages, that keep the salt and fresh water separated, closed.

After watching the small ferry cross every day we decide to take Jack across and start the trip to Adelaide. After managing the very steep descend into the city I feel even more confident driving our bus around!
